Crisis Stabilization Units

Programs that provide a short-term residential alternative to emergency room care or inpatient hospitalization for individuals in need of urgent care related to a mental health crisis, substance use disorder, or both. Participants may be referred by first responders including law enforcement officers, paramedics, and fire department personnel; mobile response crisis teams, and district attorneys. These facilities typically offer a homelike, secure environment with fewer than 16 beds that is less restrictive than a hospital.
