Child/Adolescent Crisis Stabilization Units

Programs that provide a short-term residential alternative to emergency room care or inpatient hospitalization for children and adolescents in need of urgent care and 24-hour support related to a mental or behavioral health crisis, substance use disorder, or both. Referrals to the program may be from family members or first responders including law enforcement officers, paramedics, and fire department personnel; mobile response crisis teams, and district attorneys. These facilities typically offer a homelike, secure environment with fewer than 16 beds to address a participant's immediate physical and mental health needs, including stabilization support, recovery-oriented counseling, parenting support, and referrals to community resources.
