Trauma Survivors

Individuals who experienced one or a series of events overwhelmingly negative or threatening in nature that have seriously impacted their capacity to cope, as well as their sense of safety and self-efficacy. Traumatized people commonly feel terror, shame, helplessness and powerlessness, and may experience physical, emotional, or psychological symptoms, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The response to the trauma can sometimes be delayed for months or years after the event. Traumatic events can be experienced early in life (eg., as a result of child abuse or neglect) or later due to violence, accidents, natural disasters, war, sudden unexpected loss or other life events that are out of control.
